2012 Sanford Science Fair Winners

Sanford Elementary had two students compete at the San Luis Valley Regional Science Fair on March 9th.  Brady Blinzinger, a 5th grader in Mrs. Larsen's class, competed in Botany with the project, "Tricky Tree Tricks."  He received the Pioneers in Science Award and $10.  Haley Allaire, a 4th grader in Mrs. Sowards' class, competed in Behavioral and Social Science with the project, "Sniff Test."  She received Honorable Mention for her project.  Haley and Brady enjoyed a demonstration and hands-on activities in static electricity given by Adams State College.  They were interviewed by a number of judges and explained  their projects, which was huge a learning experience for our young students.  Both students represented Sanford Elementary very well with their Science Fair projects and outstanding behavior on campus and during the interview portions of the Fair.  Congratulations to both Haley and Brady for their hard work and great success!

Elementary Curriculum

cmsOur elementary school is committed to provide students with a sound curriculum and varied opportunities to learn and grow.  Currently, we use the McGraw-Hill series to support our language program; and the Saxon Math as our primary resource for math.  New this 2010-2011 school year is the use of the NWEA MAP test given to all students in the fall, winter, and spring.  Through the MAP test we will be able to evaluate every student’s progress in Reading, Language, Math, and Science skills.  Kindergarten through 3rd will also use the DIBELS assessment for reading.   In addition, our students take the Star reading test which indicates an appropriate independent reading level for the Accelerated Reading program.  Our students are also challenged in math as they complete Accelerated Math objectives.

The district preschool runs alongside our regular school system.  Two sessions are offered daily.  We use the newly adopted “Teaching Strategies GOLD” system that is a dynamic preschool curriculum and assessment program.

Our school district's commitment to excellence is evident in the pride that is portrayed by students and community alike. We invite visitors to see what opportunities await in a school district that defines excellence.

Preschool News

Wow! It's hard to believe that it is the last quarter of the school year. Spring will bring new life in bean and flower plants into our classroom. We will also be discussing new life in farm animals.  We will be learning about plants as well as matching baby animals to their mothers. Preschoolers will be reviewing concepts that have been introduced and adding new concepts that will continue to prepare our children for kindergarten. Other new concepts that we have already begun to work on are addition and subtraction, writing numbers, writing beginning consonant sounds and problem solving using appropriate words.
Preschool registration is scheduled for April 19, 2012, beginning at 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. We will not be having our regular preschool sessions on this day. Returning students need only to update any new information on their files and do the Ages and Stages Screening Questionnaire.  Sanford Preschool has 15 available slots in our morning session (7:45-11:00 a.m.), and 15 slots available in the afternoon session (12:30-3:45 p.m.). If you are interested in your child participating in our program or know of someone interested in enrolling his/her child in preschool, please call us for more information at 274-5167.
Upcoming Important Events in April are:

News from Mrs. Forster's First Grade

The first graders have been very busy.  We have been working very hard on our curriculum. We have been reading about Amelia Earhart and how courageous she was. In
social studies we have been studying about our country and other courageous men and women.  We studied about the 50 states and our state in particular.  The students have made posters of Colorado.   Our class is a fun class that likes to read and learn!

On April 19th, we will have our class play.  It's entitled, "What's the Rumble in the Jungle."   We are having a lot of fun with our play.
